Charity Rugby Match at Durham University

Walkoncemore is honoured to announce that Durham university and Steven Cox have chosen our charity as a beneficiary of their hugely successful annual charity rugby match. We wish to whole-heartedly thank all involved, especially Steven Cox for nominating us, Jake Motion, Lucy Moulsdale, Josh Harman, Rebecca Hill, Rich Freeman and Derek Best for their tireless organisation and co-ordination of the match, Clifford Chance the 2008 match sponsor, Samurai sportswear for the provision of kit and everyone who plans to attend.

A word from chief organiser and Durham University under-graduate, Jake Motion

"The Durham University Hill vs Bailey charity rugby match is an annual fixture that pits the cream of the Durham college rugby team players against one another. The match is played in order to raise money for Steve Cox, a Durham University student, who suffered a tragic spinal injury during a Durham University Floodlit Cup rugby match in January 2006. Steve has decided to donate all money raised at this year’s event to spinal injuries charities, and the students at Durham are extremely enthusiastic in supporting Walkoncemore, a charity that could one day help find a cure for individuals such as Steve.

This year’s event will be the third annual fixture. It has proved to be so successful over its current two year life span that it was voted by the students as Durham University’s premier charity event of 2006/2007 and, with a crowd of 4 500, attracted the largest amount of spectators for any university event during the year. On top of that, the two annual events have so far managed to raise over £10 000 for Steve.

Fundraising for the event is carried out by the students themselves and includes personal sponsorship from friends and family, promotional nights and sponsorship buckets. This year’s event is very kindly sponsored by Clifford Chance, who we would like to thank for their amazing generosity and invaluable help in the planning and organisational stages. Samurai Sports Ltd have also been extremely helpful with providing kit, and we thank them for this.

This year’s event will be played at Durham City RFC on 7th May 2008, with ladies k.o. at 6pm and men at 7:30pm. Entry will be £1, with all proceeds going directly to charity. More information can be found at www.hillvsbailey.com.

We would like to wish Walkoncemore the utmost success with their fundraising and hope that there will be many more opportunities for fundraising events at Durham University in the future."
